Puppy Training and Supplies
Supplies
What supplies, kennel size, etc. do we need? We get these questions frequently, and honestly it's so encouraging that our puppies are going to homes where their new puppy parents care enough to ask what their new puppy will need. You are all amazing people and we are so thankful for the great families our puppies go to!
So, supplies can vary depending on the breed of dog, how long you want them to last, etc. We generally recommend a wire style crate that comes with a divider. The divider is used when your puppy is small to limit the area within the crate which helps them learn to hold the bladder. They naturally do not want to use the bathroom in their crate, but as they grow you can remove the divider and they can continue using the same crate as an adult. You will also need a food and water bowl, which we use stainless steel bowls that can be cleaned easily. A soft brush is another item that will keep your puppy looking good along with a good tearless shampoo. Another item we like to keep puppies busy is a Kong. You can put dog food in them, treats, etc. and it will keep a puppy or dog busy for a while! Your puppy will also come home with the other items included on the Puppy Package page.
We are also happy to provide you with a New Puppy Kit that includes all of these supplies. Just let us know that you would like a New Puppy Kit, and we will have everything ready for you to take home on puppy pick up day!

Training
If you are interested in training for your new puppy, here are a couple great resources.
Raising the Empowered Puppy by Jeanette Forrey at 4E Kennels is an excellent resource to start your new puppy of right! This will continue the initial work we began at Harvest Creek and it will give you four week step by step training plan. If you get a copy of Raising the Empowered Puppy before your new puppy comes home, you can take advantage of the preparation plans in the book that will help you be as prepared as possible for your new puppy to come home.
The K9 Training Institute is another great option. They offer a free workshop that will help you get off to a great start with your new puppy. It's completely online, but a unique dog training experience.
We have been in formal dog training classes with puppies through local facilities and while they are helpful for some basic obedience training, it's not always helpful for things like house training. The K9 Training Institute helps teach you from a canine behaviorist perspective and using service dog training techniques so that you have the best puppy on the block!
We suggest trying out the free workshop and even getting started before your new puppy comes home. That will give you an amazing jump start on training! If you want to continue training with the K9 Training Institute, the next step after the free workshop is their master class. Just saying "master class" sounds time consuming! But it's not! They will teach you how to do training for 10-15 minutes a day and you will see seriously impressive results from your dog.
You can find more information on puppy training in the Harvest Creek Blog as well.
